Theoretical prediction of the punching shear strength of concrete flat slabs under in-plane tensile forces

RC slabs can be subjected simultaneously to transverse loads and in-plane tensile forces, as it happens in top of continuous box girder bridges decks, the regions negative moments, or flat horizontal loads, produced by wind earth pressure. Tensile forces reduce shear punching capacity slabs. However, few studies have been carried out quantify this effect. With purpose, a mechanical model has developed capture influence on strength verified with tests under different load levels. The model, presented paper, consists an extension Punching Compression Chord Capacity Model account for effects resisting actions. A linear reduction function external applied obtained moderate whereas high level may produce premature yielding reinforcement further strength. proposed accurately captures available test results, including when force produces concrete cracking. In addition, predictions punching-shear-tensile literature were made theoretical models included design codes, which yielded general conservative results showed scatter.
